FAQs

What stage and types of companies does WEL invest in?
WEL invests in Canadian-based, early-stage startups at the pre-seed and seed stages that are actively fundraising and have a lead investor with a term sheet in place. We are sector-agnostic and inclusive in our approach, supporting founders of all genders while valuing meaningful female influence within leadership teams.
How much do you invest, and how fast do you decide?
We typically invest between $25,000 and $75,000 per company. Our decision process is structured but efficient. After an initial pitch, the group discusses the opportunity and votes on whether to proceed to due diligence. We recognize that founders’ time is valuable and aim to move as efficiently as possible, with final investment decisions typically made within 4-6 weeks, depending on diligence scope, group scheduling, and deal readiness.
Does WEL lead rounds?
We do not typically lead rounds. Our model is collaborative and education-led, and we usually invest alongside a lead investor or as part of a broader round. Where possible, we value companies that allow individual WEL members to co-invest alongside the fund.
What is the application and diligence process like?
Founders apply through a streamlined intake process. Selected companies are invited to pitch to a local investment group, followed by discussion and a vote on whether to proceed to due diligence. We evaluate opportunities based on factors such as early traction, market opportunity, potential returns, ethical standards, and a clear path to exit within seven to ten years. While selection criteria may vary slightly by investment group, our approach is consistent, disciplined, and respectful of founders’ time.
